3 Reasons Email List Hygiene Will Skyrocket Your Email Marketing Results

email list hygiene

Email list hygiene, it isn’t brushing your email’s teeth. Email list hygiene is about cleaning out contacts that are inactive from your future email marketing campaigns. I know it can be tempting to keep everyone on your list because those higher numbers look pretty BUT you truthfully only want to be emailing people that want your messages.

Why Should I Care About Email List Hygiene?

Isn’t this just another annoying task I have to put on my plate? I don’t even know how to do it. Can I just put it off?

I highly recommend that you take out a few minutes to learn how to do this through your autoresponder. Once you learn, it is fairly simple and here are 3 reasons why you should practice email list hygiene yourself or look into email list hygiene services.

#1 – Email Service Providers Are Watching

Email service providers want to provide the best experience possible for their users. This means they are watching to see which emails their users actually want.

Could you imagine if all of the emails that were sent to you were put straight through to your inbox? I personally use Gmail and while I was not a fan of the sorting of “Primary” “Social” “Promotions” in the beginning, it is actually very helpful now.

Here are a few things that email service providers are looking at to decide where your email goes and if it should even go at all.

  • Opens
  • Click Throughs
  • Recent Optins

Depending on the frequency of your email marketing is how far you should go back to see activity. If you send emails every day then people that have not opened or engaged in the last 30 days may be more of a liability than an asset. If you are a monthly sender then you can go back 120-180 days.

#2 – Could Make Your Package Less Expensive

Most email service providers charge higher rates when you have more people on your list. Why pay higher rates for higher number of sends if people are not opening those emails? Doesn’t make any sense, right?

Your autoresponder service should have an easy way to see who has been active and when the last time was. It most likely is titled “list hygiene” in one of your menu sections.

#3 – Higher Open Rates

Whenever you are not being flagged as spam because people do not want to open your emails, you are going to get a higher open rate. This is not only because you are trimming off the inactive people but because it sends a signal to the email service provider that your content is wanted and welcomed to most of your subscribers.
